7 things to do in Nuremberg, Germany

If you haven’t been, it is a must.  I actually get to Nuremberg pretty regularly and not just for travel.  This is where I go to get my haircut, go shopping, etc.  It is just a great city to get out and walk around town.  It has a small town charm in a big city package.  Just choose a parking deck before you leave and punch in the address so you don’t have to worry about finding a parking spot.  You can see a list here.

Now, what I always do if I am planning to sight see is choose all of the locations I want to see and drop them into google maps so I can make sure I don’t spend all day walking back and forth.  I figure out the best route to see everything I want to see without too much backtracking.  Then I print it out and take it with me for reference.

But back to the fun stuff!  What I suggest seeing in Nuremberg.  There are so many options, from great shops to amazing cathedrals.  There is really something for everyone, and I haven’t seen nearly everything there is to see.

The Saint Lorenz Kirche is an amazing medieval church in the center of the city.  I highly suggest taking a look inside.  While the church did take major damage during the second world war, it is still an impressive display of Gothic architecture.   The church was completed around the beginning of the 15th century.  Later in 1438, they began work on the choir which was completed in 1477 and also where that Gothic architecture was introduced.

Another great church to visit is the Saint Sebaldus Kirche.  This church is another medieval church.  It seems this church is slightly less visited than the previous St Lorenz, it is actually one of the most important and oldest churches in the city.  It is named after the patron saint of Nuremberg from the 8th century who was also a hermit and a missionary.  Construction began in or around 1225 and finished in or around 1275 as a Romanesque basilica.  Many changes occurred to the church during the 14th century and then later in the 15th century the two towers were added.  This structure also suffered serious damage during the second world war but the restoration has brought it back to life.

And then the third church I suggest visiting is the Frauenkirche, or “The Church of Our Lady’.  This one is a bit different from the previous two I have mentioned and features brick Gothic architecture.  It was built between 1352 and 1362.  It actually replaced a former Jewish Synagogue that was destroyed during the pogrom of 1349.  One of the most famous features of the church is actually on the outside.  The Männleinlaufen, a mechanical clock.  The clock was put in during the very early 1500’s to commemorate the Golden Bull of 1356.  The mechanism can be seen at midday as a bell is run to begin the sequence.

Now, my next suggestion is just outside the Church of our Land – The Hauptmarkt!  This is where you can find a daily market rain or shine.  But if there is something going on like the Christmas Market or flohmarkt then this is where you want to be.  Always worth a walk through!

Also, in the market area is the Schoner Brunnen.  This is a 14th-century fountain towering over the market square at around 19 meters high.  It was built in the shape of a Gothic spire during the late 1300’s.

Another stop is the Heilig-Geist-Spital or The Hospital of the Holy Spirit. I know I know, your asking, why would I visit the hospital.  Well, this is also quite an iconic view of Nuremberg.  If you have already done some searching for things to see and do in the city, you have probably already seen photos.  This is such a beautiful part of town with the river, bridges, architecture, and street vendors.  And that is why I include it in my list.  The hospital church was established in 1332.

This last suggestion is not in the same area of town as the rest of these and is probably more of a day trip in itself.  It’s the zoo!  The Nuremberg zoo is a great place to go with family and / or kids.  The gardens and grounds are amazing on their own.  Definitely worth a walk through!
