I love visiting small towns and “local” attractions when I travel.  So day trips are great!  This last weekend I talked Kat and her daughter Brianna into doing some local-ish exploring with me.  And so on Saturday morning, I found myself driving to the little (and might I say adorable) village of Kastl to pick them up and start our adventure.

Before setting out for our actual destination though we decided to make a quick stop to look inside of the local Klosterburg church.  It was very interesting to walk through.  It was originally established in the very early 1100’s.  A new Torturn (gate tower) was built in the 14th century.  Later from 1958 to 2007 it was used as a Hungarian school.  The church is still in use.  You can see a lot more in my video.

From Kastl, we drove down to the town of Kallmünz on the river Nabb.  This is such a beautiful area of Germany.  We quickly found a parking spot on the river and got our backpack ready with snacks and water.

From there is was easy to follow the trail and start our way up the mountain.  That part, not quite as easy.  It is a steep hike with large uneven stairs.  Not hard per say, but also not easy.  I was admittedly out of breath at the halfway point.  But I took that as an excuse to stop and take some photos of the amazing view.

Totally worth stopping to catch my breath right?  Brianna made both me and Kat look bad when she continued to run up the mountain no problem.  But, in the end, we made it up to the top and it was well worth the walk.  The old castle ruins are pretty amazing to wander through. The castle was originally fortified during the bronze age but dates back as far as the 900’s.

It is a strange, amazing feeling walking through somewhere with so much history.  Just trying to imagine how things might have been when the structure was in its prime could fill my imagination for days.  I wish there was more to read about when it comes to some of the smaller castles like this.  I would love to indulge in a few good stories about the people who lived here when it a towering castle looking down over the town below.

The walk down was significantly easier than the walk up and we made it to the bottom rather quickly.  We decided to go ahead and treat ourselves to a treat – ice cream!  And so our next stop was Eisdiele Costa Del Gelate, where I discovered Eis Kaffee.  And while I am pretty sure that just translates to iced coffee (which is my favorite), it is SO MUCH MORE!  It is a scoop of vanilla ice cream with iced coffee poured over and topped with whipped cream.  So good.  I now crave it constantly.  And to be expected… I got way to excited and didn’t take a photo before I started.  But I did snap a photo of the lovely raspberry sunday that Kat and Bri shared.  It was prettier than mine anyway.

Once we finished our treats we walked around town a bit.  I had seen a few places I wanted to walk through when we drove in.  Namely these two adorable houses.

I wanted to see the inside of both of them so bad!

We did a little bit more sightseeing around town before getting in the car and driving on to Parsberg for dinner.  Before we started stuffing our face we decided to check out the church at the top of the hill first.

Kat had been to Goldenes Kreuz before and was craving some Pho.  So that is exactly what we did and it was so yummy!  Brianna opted for the spring rolls (which I may or may not have stolen and tasted).  She must have liked them because I think they were all gone before our pho even arrived!
